#10 Fabulous Things We Love: Brewer’s Yeast And Oatmeal Scrub

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

I have to share this skincare secret with you. It doesn’t smell so pretty but I promise your skin will glow! One of my amazing teachers at FIDM gave us this recipe for a natural exfoliator:

1/4 cup brewer’s yeast

1/4 cup chopped oatmeal

purified water

In a small bowl, mix dry ingredients and put into a jar to save excess for future use. In another small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of the scrub with enough water to form a spreadable paste. Allow mixture to thicken for 1 minute.

Using your fingertips, massage onto face and throat and allow to dry for 15 minutes. It’s important to not wash it off immediately.

Trust me on this one. I’ve become quite the beauty product junkie and have been searching for a perfect exfoliator. Before I tried this recipe I was doing a comparison between Fresh’s Soy Face Exfoliant, Kate Somerville’s Exfolikate and NaturaBisse’s C+C Vitamin Scrub. At the time I was in love with Kate’s Exfolikate. After using it, my skin was so soft, smooth and had the sexiest glow to it. However, the oatmeal from the recipe is so gentle that you won’t be able to go back to a product that has granules in it. I was stunned to realize how coarse and irritating these products truly are.

The other great thing about this homemade recipe is that it immediately kills any pimples. If I ever have a little breakout I just whip up a little batch, scrub and let it sit for 15 minutes. Every single time I’ve done it my breakouts are gone by the next morning. I promise.

#6 Fabulous Things We Love: "Boo" the Dog

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

Pomeranians or “pom poms” have been around for centuries.  Queen Victoria had one in 1888.  Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba and Hillary Duff are also proud owners of these adorable, sweet, intelligent, affectionate and friendly small (less than 8lb) dogs.  So what makes a Pomeranian one of the top 15 most popular dog breeds in the United States?

Meet Boo!  Boo, the little Pomeranian that has topped the social media charts with possibly the most number of friends of any dog on Facebook (as of today 3/21/11 he has 958,331 friends! Watch out Charlie Sheen!).  Boo’s perfectly manicured mane, marshmallow legs and loving eyes makes you want to melt.  Every day I can’t wait to see what new photo will be posted of him.  Will Boo be sleepy?  Will he be playing?  Will he be in costume?  And not to mention he is quite the successful and philanthropic little business dog.  With sponsorships flying at him left and right and his charity endorsements, Boo doesn’t need an MBA!

Oh to live the life of Boo the Dog.

#5 Fabulous Things We Love: Dry Shampoo

Solve your bad hair day

How many times do you wake up late and really don’t have time to take a full shower and shampoo, condition, blow-dry and then style your hair? Or, you’re like me and sometimes just plain lazy. A hairstylist shared her little secret with me when she was styling my hair and wanted to add more volume. She sprayed a little bit of Tresemme Dry Shampoo in my roots and voila! I had Dolly Parton hair!  Not only does it absorb oil when you skip shampoos, but it creates great lift and bounce.

Just make sure to spray it several inches away from your root and brush it through or else you’ll look like you have white streaks in your hair (that could a good look too if you’re going for the Stacy London from TLC’s What Not to Wear look).  You can also blowdry it after you spray to really lock in that volume. It’s fabulous! So simple to use and extremely affordable. Only $4 and lasts forever!  Love it!

#4 Fabulous Things We Love: A Great Pair of Jeans

Thursday, September 01, 2011

Awww…that feeling of a great pair of jeans. The kind that fits just right in all the right spots.  The kind that you don’t have to do the frog dance to get into or suck in all day when you’re wearing them.  It’s the pair that makes your butt look good, your legs look long and feel like you’re wearing sweat pants (we wish).  It’s those jeans you found randomly when you weren’t looking that caught you by surprise and made you take a second glance in the mirror. Maybe you even started dancing when you tried them on (winner).

A great pair of jeans can change your mood; change your strut even! I have a favorite pair of jeans that I won’t ever let go of. Of course they are discontinued and I can’t find them anywhere and the knee is missing and I’ve had to get them repaired a couple times, but I don’t care. I love those jeans. I need those jeans.  When I wear those jeans I feel like Jennifer Aniston in any given movie and how she always looks like the most beautiful all American girl next door-that effortless classic beauty.  Finding a great pair of jeans is like winning the lottery.  And when you find them, buy them in every wash and then one more just in case!
